जीवन का अंतिम सत्य है मृत्यु… भागवत गीता में श्री कृष्ण ने कहा है ,”मृत्यु एक ऐसा सत्य है, जिसे टाला नहीं जा सकता जिसने जन्म लिया है उसकी मृत्यु निश्चित है।” यही जीवन का सार है जो जीव इस धरती पर आया है, उसे एक दिन यहां से जाना है। 
यह प्रकृति का अटल नियम है… जिस प्रकार मृत्यु जीवन का महत्वपूर्ण पड़ाव है वैसे ही मृत्यु के साथ इस लोक से व्यक्ति की अंतिम विदाई भी महत्व रखती है जिसे शवयात्रा कहते हैं।
किसी भी इंसान की मृत्यु के बाद शवयात्रा निकाली जाती है और इस संबंध में भी शास्त्रों में कई नियम बताए गए हैं जिन्हें अपनाने से धर्म लाभ तो प्राप्त होता है साथ ही इससे मृत आत्मा को शांति भी मिलती है।शवयात्रा से सम्बन्धित हम आपकों ऐसे कुछ नियम और लोक मान्यताओं के बारे में बताने जा रहे है जिसके करने से मनुष्य को लाभ मिलता है।
1. शव यात्रा देखते ही प्रणाम करें
जब भी कोई शव यात्रा अथवा अर्थी दिखे तो उसे दोनों हाथ जोड़कर, सिर झुका कर प्रणाम करें और मुंह से शिव-शिव का जाप करें।
इसके पीछे शास्त्रोक्त मान्यता यह है कि जिस मृतात्मा ने अभी शरीर छोड़ा है, वह अपने साथ उस प्रणाम करने वाले व्यक्ति के सभी कष्टों, दुखों और अशुभ लक्षणों को अपने साथ ले जाए तथा उस व्यक्ति को “शिव” यानि मुक्ति प्रदान करें।

2. आत्मा की शान्ति के लिए करें प्रार्थना
शव यात्रा को देखकर वहां से गुजरने वाले लोग थोड़ी देर ठहर जाते हैं और ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते है। यह हिन्दू धर्म का एक प्रमुख नियम है, जिसके अनुसार शवयात्रा को देखने के बाद हमें मृत आत्मा की शांति के लिए प्रार्थना करनी चाहिए। इससे मृत आत्मा को शांति मिलती है।
3. पूरे हो जाएंगे रूके काम
धार्मिक दृष्टिकोण के अलावा ज्योतिष की भाषा में भी शवयात्रा देखना शुभ बताया गया है। मान्यता है कि यदि कोई व्यक्ति शव यात्रा को देखता है, तो उसके रुके काम पूरे होने की संभावनाएं बन जाती है। उसके जीवन से दुख भी दूर होते हैं और उसकी मनोकामना पूर्ण होती है।
4. यज्ञ के बराबर मिलता है पुण्य
पुराणों के अनुसार जो व्यक्ति ब्राह्मण की अर्थी उठाता है, उसे अपने हर कदम पर एक यज्ञ के बराबर पुण्य प्राप्त होता है।
